Retatrutide Storage: How to Store Reta in the Fridge, Out of It and on the Road
Retatrutide storage, checked against FDA and approved GLP-1 labels: fridge range, the 28-day mixed-vial limit, time out of the fridge, freezing and flying.
Retatrutide storage comes down to three habits: keep it in the fridge at 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F), keep it away from the freezer and the light, and throw a mixed vial away 28 days after the first puncture, which is FDA's general limit for multi-dose vials of sterile drugs. None of those numbers was measured on retatrutide. Lilly hasn't published storage instructions, and there's no public stability data for the vials sold online, so every rule on this page comes from a regulator or an approved drug's label, and we name which one.
Key takeaways
- Every storage number you'll see for retatrutide is borrowed from another drug or a general rule, and we show which one.
- A mixed vial has a hard stop at day 28 no matter how much is left, which caps it at about 4 weekly doses.
- The 21-day and 30-day room temperature allowances belong to Lilly's tirzepatide products, not to home-mixed powder.
- Two approved GLP-1 labels say not to use the drug once it has frozen, and nobody has tested retatrutide either way.
- Flying with a vial is mostly a cooling problem, and TSA has a specific rule for the ice packs.
Retatrutide is still in Phase 3 trials and no approved version exists yet. Lilly's FAQ, last updated July 2026, says it's available only to people in Lilly's trials, and the FAQ says nothing about storage. So the useful question is which approved drug's rules fit the vial in your fridge, and where those rules stop fitting.
Does retatrutide need to be refrigerated?
Yes, as far as anyone can tell, before and after mixing. Both approved GLP-1 injection labels we checked keep unused product in the fridge: Zepbound's label says 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F), and so does Wegovy's. FDA's page on unapproved GLP-1 drugs puts it flatly: injectable GLP-1 drugs need refrigeration as their package inserts state.
The powder is where the evidence runs out. Sellers ship retatrutide as a freeze-dried cake that you mix with bacteriostatic (bac) water, and nobody has published how that powder holds up at room temperature. Some peptide powders don't need the fridge at all. Egrifta WR, an approved tesamorelin powder mixed with bac water at home, is stored at 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), and its mixed vial is kept at room temperature too. That rule comes from Theratechnologies' own stability testing, and it tells you nothing about retatrutide. The same label also says never to refrigerate the mixed vial, so the fridge isn't right for every peptide. For retatrutide, with no testing of its own, the GLP-1 labels are the closest guide, and they say fridge.
The bac water itself is a room-temperature product. Hospira's label says to store it at 20 to 25°C, and the Egrifta WR instructions say to throw an opened bottle away 28 days after first use.
Where in the fridge
A shelf near the middle, in the carton or a small box. CDC's vaccine guidance says to keep refrigerated vaccines off the door shelves, out of the fruit and vegetable drawers and away from cooling vents, because those spots swing in temperature. Wegovy's label adds a warning not to store it next to the cooling element. FDA's food safety page notes that few fridge dials show the real temperature and suggests a cheap freestanding appliance thermometer, which is also the only way to know a vial stayed between 2 and 8°C.
Label the vial the day you mix it
Write the mixing date and the discard date (mixing date plus 28 days) on the vial. CDC's rule for opened multi-dose vials starts with exactly that: date it when it's first punctured.Retatrutide storage rules, borrowed from approved labels
This table puts the storage rules you'll see quoted for retatrutide next to the documents they actually come from.
| Product or rule | Before first use | Out of the fridge | After first use or mixing | Freezing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zepbound single-dose pen or vial (tirzepatide) | Fridge, 2 to 8°C | Up to 21 days in total, not above 30°C (86°F), then discard | Single use | Don't freeze; don't use if frozen |
| Zepbound multi-dose vial or KwikPen | Fridge until the printed expiry date | Unopened: discard after 30 days at up to 30°C | Fridge or up to 30°C; discard after 30 days or 4 weekly doses | Don't freeze; don't use if frozen |
| Wegovy single-dose pen (semaglutide) | Fridge, 2 to 8°C | Up to 28 days at 8 to 30°C before the cap comes off | Single use | Don't freeze; don't use if frozen |
| Wegovy FlexTouch pen | Fridge, 2 to 8°C | Not stated before first use | 56 days at 15 to 30°C or in the fridge | Don't freeze; don't use if frozen |
| Egrifta WR (tesamorelin powder) | Room temperature, 20 to 25°C, out of the light | Not applicable | Mixed: room temperature, discard after 7 days; never refrigerate | Don't freeze |
| Any multi-dose vial (FDA, CDC) | Not covered | Not covered | Discard 28 days after first puncture | Not covered |
| Retatrutide | No published instructions | No published data | No published data | No published data |

Our read: the room-temperature allowances in this table were earned by stability testing of finished, sealed products. A vial you mixed yourself in your kitchen has had none, so treat the fridge as the rule and the out-of-fridge numbers as the outside edge, not as a budget to spend.
How long does reta last in the fridge?
Mixed, 28 days from the first puncture. On its page about compounded GLP-1 drugs, FDA says to discard a multi-dose vial within 28 days of first use because the risk of contamination rises after that, even if liquid is left and even if the compounder's instructions say it lasts longer. CDC's guidance for healthcare providers sets the same 28-day rule unless the maker states another date. Lilly's own Zepbound multi-dose vial gets 30 days or 4 weekly doses, whichever comes first.
Here's how that plays out on a calendar. Say you mix and take the first dose on Sunday, October 4. Weekly doses fall on October 11, 18 and 25, and the fifth would land on November 1, which is day 28 itself. So a mixed vial realistically covers 4 weekly doses, 5 at the very edge. At 2 mg a week, the first step in TRIUMPH-1, a 10 mg vial holds 5 doses, so this vial size and the calendar collide. Our retatrutide calculator works out how many doses your vial holds at your mix, and how to reconstitute retatrutide covers the mixing itself.
Unmixed powder has no published shelf life at all. The date on an online vial is whatever the seller printed. CDC's rule for opened vials adds one ceiling: the use-by date never goes past the maker's original expiry date.
How long can retatrutide be out of the fridge?
No one has measured it for retatrutide. The numbers people quote, 21 days and 30 days, are Zepbound's: a single-dose pen or vial may spend up to 21 days in total out of the fridge at up to 30°C (86°F), and an unopened multi-dose vial up to 30 days. Wegovy's single-dose pen gets 28 days at 8 to 30°C before the cap comes off. Those are tested, sealed products made by the companies that sell them.
For a home-mixed vial, the practical answer depends on how long and how warm:
- A few minutes on the counter while you draw a dose is part of normal use. Put it back afterward.
- A night on the counter in a cool room is a judgment call with no data behind either answer. A room below 30°C stays inside the approved labels' ceiling, but nobody can tell you how much of a home-mixed vial's strength survived, and only a new vial takes the doubt away.
- Anything that got hot, such as a car in summer or a sunny windowsill, went past the 30°C ceiling on the approved labels. Throw it away.
Storage starts before the vial reaches you. FDA says it has had complaints of compounded GLP-1 drugs arriving warm or with too few ice packs, and it advises not to use any injectable GLP-1 drug that arrives warm or poorly chilled. If you're looking at retatrutide for sale online, ask how it ships, but remember that cold packing can't fix what's inside the vial: in an advisory published September 14, 2026, Australia's TGA said a vial sold as retatrutide had tested with no retatrutide at all and undeclared semaglutide at about 8 times the level in approved semaglutide products.
Can you freeze retatrutide?
Nobody has tested it. The two approved GLP-1 labels in the table are clear about their own drugs: Zepbound says don't freeze it, and Wegovy says don't freeze it and don't use it if it has been frozen. Egrifta WR, the approved peptide powder, also says don't freeze it.
Two situations come up:
- A mixed vial froze by accident at the back of the fridge. The approved labels would have you throw it away, and there's no retatrutide data to argue otherwise.
- Freezing unmixed powder to make a stockpile last. Some online storage guides, several from peptide sellers, recommend -20°C for powder. No stability data for retatrutide powder at any temperature has been published, so that advice rests on how other peptides behave.
Our read: a freezer buys you nothing you can verify, and a frozen mixed vial is one of the few storage mistakes the approved labels answer outright.
Traveling with retatrutide
Threads on r/Retatrutide ask about taking a vial on vacation and flying abroad with it. The job is to keep the vial between 2 and 8°C for the whole trip, in its carton, and never touching the ice. CDC's vaccine guidance warns that cold air from a freezer compartment can freeze refrigerated vaccines, and a frozen ice pack pressed against the glass could do the same to a vial.
At a US airport, TSA's rules for medically necessary liquids (checked September 2026) allow larger amounts than the usual carry-on limit in reasonable quantities, but you have to declare them to the officer at the checkpoint for inspection. Medically necessary gel ice packs are allowed even when they're melted or slushy. Keep the vial in your carry-on rather than a checked bag, where you can't control the temperature. TSA's page adds that the final decision rests with the officer at the checkpoint.
Crossing a border is a separate question. Retatrutide isn't approved anywhere, so what you can bring into another country depends on that country's rules on unapproved medicines, and TSA's screening rules don't cover it. Check the destination's medicines regulator before you pack.
On arrival, put the vial in a proper fridge with a thermometer if you can, since a hotel minibar's temperature is anyone's guess, and check the vial before the next dose.
Signs a vial has gone bad
Look at it every time you take it out. Zepbound's instructions say to check that the medicine isn't frozen or cloudy, is colorless to slightly yellow and has no particles. Nobody has published what mixed retatrutide should look like, so hold it to the same bar. If it's cloudy, stringy or has flecks, stop and read what cloudy retatrutide means. A vial past day 28, or one that froze or overheated, goes in the trash however clear it looks.
Lost potency is the failure you can't see. A vial that looks perfect may still hold less drug than the label says, and without lab testing there's no way to tell at home.
Get medical help now
Get urgent care for redness, heat or swelling that spreads from an injection site, pus, or a fever after an injection, since those can be signs of infection. The same goes for hives, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing.Use a new needle and syringe for every dose, since FDA warns that reused ones can contaminate what's left in the vial; how to inject retatrutide covers the steps. If you've heard about a retatrutide pen with its own storage rules, our retatrutide pen page covers what exists and what doesn't.
Frequently asked questions
Does reta need to be refrigerated before opening?
Nobody has published data on unmixed retatrutide powder, so there's no tested answer. The Zepbound and Wegovy labels both say to keep unused product in the fridge at 2 to 8°C, and that's the safer default for a sealed vial too. Some peptide powders are stored at room temperature, but those rules come from their own stability testing, which retatrutide doesn't have.
How long does reta last in the fridge?
Once mixed, use it within 28 days of the first puncture and then throw it away, even if liquid is left. That's FDA's general rule for multi-dose vials of sterile drugs, stated on its page about compounded GLP-1 drugs. An unmixed vial has no published shelf life, so the only date you have is whatever the seller printed.
How long can retatrutide be out of the fridge?
There's no retatrutide figure. Lilly lets a Zepbound single-dose pen or vial spend up to 21 days in total out of the fridge at up to 30°C, and an unopened multi-dose vial up to 30 days, but that's tirzepatide made and tested by Lilly. For a home-mixed vial, a few hours for a dose or a flight is a different thing from days on a warm counter.
Can you freeze retatrutide?
Nobody has tested freezing retatrutide, mixed or unmixed. The Zepbound and Wegovy labels both say don't freeze the drug and don't use it if it has frozen. If a mixed vial froze in the back of the fridge, the approved labels would have you throw it away.
Does retatrutide expire?
Yes, in the sense that every drug does, but no one has published how long retatrutide stays stable, so an expiry date on an online vial isn't backed by any data you can check. Once you puncture a vial, FDA's 28-day limit applies, and CDC says an opened vial's use-by date never goes past the maker's original expiry date.
